The nude-photo file-sharing ploy had apparently been a relatively open secret among students, but administrators and district officials used tight discretion on formally acknowledging the case, in part at the behest of police investigators who did not want to tip off potential suspects and spur them to delete evidence.īut the Chronicle story prompted the Mountain View Los Altos School District to issue a joint letter with the police department Monday explaining the investigation to the school community. None of the students implicated in the file sharing were in a romantic relationship with any of the others, Nelson said.
When Mountain View High School learned of the culprit file-sharing account, they alerted police, who were able to “freeze the Dropbox account to prevent sharing and uploading of images” thereafter, Nelson said. As many as four other high schools could have students who were privy to the photo exchange, a source familiar with the case told this newspaper. Those suspected to be involved are both male and female, and the explicit images they allegedly exchanged among each other involve at least two female students. The San Francisco Chronicle first reported on the investigation Sunday.Ī “handful of individuals,” all minors, are at the center of the investigation, Mountain View police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said.
Mountain View police confirmed that detectives have been investigating the case since late August. Mountain View High School is the only campus identified as having students tied to the ersatz network of images of underage girls, at least one of whom attends the school.
